Reproduction figures and fake polybags

The minifigure market runs on a single fragile thing: trust that a figure is genuine. Reproductions — copies of valuable figures, and counterfeit polybags — attack that trust directly, and because rare figures can be worth a great deal in a tiny object, the incentive to fake them is high. This is the figure collector's authentication problem, and handling it is non-negotiable.

What gets reproduced

Two main categories: reproduction minifigures, which copy rare or valuable figures (custom-printed on genuine or fake bases, or wholly counterfeit), and counterfeit polybags, which fake the small sealed formats that are cheap to produce and simple to seal. Both target the same weakness — high value in a small, hard-to-verify item.

The tells on figures

• Print quality. Genuine LEGO printing is sharp, precisely registered, and consistent. Repros often show slightly soft, misaligned, or off-colour printing under close inspection.
• The base and mould. Check the moulding, the stamps and markings on the figure's parts, and the clutch and feel. Custom repros sometimes use genuine bases with fake printing — so the printing is where the truth usually lives.
• Accessories and colour. Wrong shades, subtly wrong accessory moulds, or parts that should not exist in that figure are giveaways. Knowing the genuine variant cold is the prerequisite.
• Provenance. For valuable figures, the seller's track record and the figure's history matter. A rare figure with no provenance from an unverified seller is a risk.

The trust contract

Every figure sale is a small act of trust: the buyer pays a genuine price on the belief the figure is genuine. Reproductions are a bet that the buyer will not look closely enough to tell.

This is why Ashlard's minifigure market deliberately excludes reproductions from the listings it shows — a price built on repro-contaminated data is a false price, and the floor must reflect genuine figures only. The same principle should govern your buying: a market is only as honest as its authentication.

Practical defence

Learn the genuine article before you spend, buy rare figures from reputable sellers with provenance, scrutinise printing above all, and treat below-market "rare" figures as suspect. For counterfeit polybags, know the genuine packaging and seals. The figure market is one of the most rewarding corners of the hobby — but only for collectors who make authentication a habit rather than an afterthought.
