Identifying a genuine minifigure variant

In the figure market, a "variant" is a specific version of a character distinguished by printing, mould, or accessories — and the difference between a common variant and a rare one can be large. Identifying a genuine variant correctly is both a valuation skill and an authentication skill, because the same details that define a variant are the ones a reproduction gets wrong.

What makes a variant

A character can appear across many sets in subtly different forms. The distinguishing features are:

• Printing. Face printing, torso and leg detail, and the back printing (often overlooked) differ between variants. A redesigned print is frequently what separates an early, rare variant from a later common one.
• Mould. Headgear, hair, and specialised body moulds can be variant-specific. A unique mould is a strong marker of a particular release.
• Accessories. The specific weapon, tool, or element a figure shipped with can define the variant — and is often what is missing or wrong on a fake or an incomplete figure.
• Colour. Subtle shade differences in plastic or print distinguish variants and expose reproductions.

Why it matters for value

Two figures of the same character can sit at very different prices because one is a scarce early variant and the other a common reissue. Knowing which you hold — or are buying — is the difference between paying the right price and the wrong one. This is variant literacy: reading the specific features that place a figure in its exact release.

The features that define a genuine variant are precisely the features a reproduction must counterfeit. Learn the real variant in detail, and you learn how to catch the fake at the same time.

A reproduction succeeds by approximating a variant well enough to pass a glance. The collector who knows the genuine printing, mould, and accessories down to the detail can tell the approximation from the real thing — which is why variant identification and authentication are really one skill.

Variant literacy comes from references and attention: study known-genuine examples, learn which features define the variants you collect, and check printing, mould, and accessories against that knowledge before buying. For valuable figures, combine this with provenance and a reputable seller. The reward is the confidence to buy rare figures correctly — and to spot, in a crowded listing, the one variant worth far more than its neighbours.
