Polybags, GWPs and promos
The small sealed sets — gifts-with-purchase, polybags and promotional builds.
Not every collectible comes in a box. Some of the most quietly sought objects in the hobby are the smallest: polybags, gifts-with-purchase, and promotional builds. They cost little when current and are easy to overlook — which is exactly why some become scarce and valuable, and why they deserve a place in any serious collector's map.
The three small formats
Polybags are small sets packaged in a sealed plastic bag rather than a box — usually inexpensive, often impulse or promotional items. Most stay cheap forever; a few, tied to a strong theme or a short distribution, become genuinely scarce after retirement.
Gifts-with-purchase (GWPs) are sets given away with a qualifying order during a promotion. Because they were never sold directly and only existed for a limited window, GWPs can be far scarcer than their size suggests — supply was capped not by sales but by the length of the promotion.
Promotional builds include convention exclusives, employee or partner gifts, and one-off giveaways. These can be the rarest objects of all, sometimes produced in tiny numbers, and they sit at the specialist end of the market.
Why small things can be valuable
The logic is pure scarcity meeting demand. A polybag or GWP often had a short, narrow distribution, and — being small and cheap — few were preserved sealed. When the format ties to a beloved theme or character, the surviving sealed population can be tiny relative to the collectors who want it. Size is no guide to value; distribution and survival are.
The authentication caveat
The same qualities that make small sealed items collectible make them easy to fake. Counterfeit polybags exist, and because the items are cheap to produce and the seals simple, verification matters. Buy from reputable sources, learn the genuine packaging, and treat a too-cheap "rare" polybag with suspicion.
Where they sit in a collection
The grails get the attention, but a collection's character often lives in its small, hard-to-find pieces — the GWP nobody kept, the convention polybag that never sold. Scarcity does not require scale.
