Where to buy, and where to sell
The venues — and which one suits which set.
Where you transact is a decision, not a default. Each venue has a different audience, fee structure, liquidity, and risk profile, and matching the venue to the set and the goal is part of buying and selling well. Here is how the main channels compare.
The main venues
- BrickLink. The dedicated collector marketplace — deep for both complete sets and parts, with a knowledgeable audience. Strong for selling to people who know exactly what they want, and the home of parts-out selling.
- General marketplaces (eBay and similar). The largest audience and the deepest pool for sealed sets, with real buyer volume — but higher fees, more noise, and more counterfeit and dispute risk to manage.
- Auctions. Catawiki, Heritage and specialist houses suit high-value grails and unusual items, reaching serious buyers — at the cost of buyer's premiums and seller commissions.
- Collector communities and local. Forums, groups, and in-person sales can mean lower fees and trusted counterparties, at the cost of smaller reach and slower transactions.
Matching venue to set
- Common, liquid sets → the broad marketplaces, where the audience is largest and a buyer is always available.
- Grails and high-value items → auctions or specialist channels, where the right buyers concentrate and the price discovery is better.
- Parts and completeness needs → BrickLink, purpose-built for it.
- Speed vs. price → broad marketplaces sell fast; patient channels (the right collector, the right auction) often realise more but take longer.
The venue is part of the price. The same set nets different proceeds depending on where you sell, what that channel charges, and whether its audience is the one that wants your set.
Risk and fees, always
Every venue carries a fee stack and a risk profile — factor both before you transact, not after. For buying, venue choice is also your first defence against counterfeits: reputable, protected channels reduce the risk a fake reaches you. The disciplined collector chooses the venue deliberately, weighing reach, cost, speed, and trust against the specific set and goal at hand.
