Conventions and the fan scene
BrickFair, Brickworld and where collectors gather.
The AFOL community gathers in person, and the convention scene — events like BrickFair, Brickworld, and dozens of regional shows worldwide — is where the hobby becomes a living, social thing. For collectors, conventions are part celebration, part marketplace, and part education, and they are worth understanding even if you never attend.
What conventions are
LEGO fan conventions are gatherings of enthusiasts to display original builds, trade and buy sets and parts, meet fellow collectors, and sometimes encounter exclusive or promotional items released at the event. They range from large, well-known shows to intimate regional meets, and they exist across much of the world.
Why they matter to collectors
- A marketplace with provenance. Conventions are a place to buy and sell among knowledgeable people, often with more trust and less counterfeit risk than anonymous online channels — you are dealing face to face with the community.
- Convention exclusives. Some events release exclusive sets or promotional items in tiny numbers, which can become genuinely scarce collectibles — among the rarer objects in the hobby.
- Education and connection. Seeing collections and builds in person, and talking to specialists, accelerates learning in a way no amount of reading matches. The vintage and niche knowledge concentrated at a good show is hard to find elsewhere.
A convention is the hobby made physical — its market, its knowledge, and its community in one room. For the collector, it is equal parts marketplace and masterclass.
The fan scene beyond conventions
The in-person scene extends past the big events: local user groups, regional meets, and informal gatherings sustain the community between conventions. Plugging into this scene — even just a local group — connects you to trusted counterparties, shared expertise, and the social pleasure that makes collecting more than acquisition. The hobby rewards participation, and the fan scene is where participation happens.
