Collecting Icons & Creator Expert
The adult display line — the largest sets LEGO makes.
Icons — formerly Creator Expert — is LEGO's adult display line, home to the largest and most ambitious sets the company makes outside of licences. From the Modular Buildings to standalone showpieces like the Colosseum (10276) and the Eiffel Tower (10307), Icons is where unlicensed collecting reaches its most serious, display-led register.
What the line is
Icons sets are designed for adults and for display: high part counts, refined detail, and subjects chosen for their presence on a shelf rather than play value. The line spans the Modulars (its most disciplined sub-series), large landmark and vehicle builds, botanical sets, and the occasional record-breaking centrepiece. It is the unlicensed counterpart to the UCS line — scarce by price point, prestigious by design.
Why it collects well
- Price-point scarcity. High RRPs mean lower production volumes and fewer casual buyers — fewer copies enter the world, and more are kept carefully.
- Display prestige. As showpieces, the flagships hold standing that ordinary sets do not; a retired Icons centrepiece is a recognised object.
- Condition sensitivity. Large, box-fragile sets prized in sealed condition — the sealed-to-used gap on the big sets is pronounced, rewarding careful storage.
- No licence risk. Unlike licensed themes, Icons sets do not depend on a licence remaining active — their demand is intrinsic to the build.
How to collect it
The line splits naturally into the Modular street (a multi-year completionist pursuit dominated by the scarce early titles) and the standalone flagships (bought individually for the subjects you love). Both reward the pre-retirement buy: a current Icons centrepiece bought at retail before it retires is one of the cleanest entries into serious unlicensed collecting.
Icons is the proof that the top of the market does not need a licence — scarcity, prestige, and design are enough. The best of the line appreciates as reliably as anything in the catalogue.
